At Burnett Medical Centre we do not use a scalpel. Instead, Dr Ayo carefully isolates the vas deferens. The vas deferens is cut and sealed to block sperm. No stitches are needed to close the opening, which heals quickly, with virtually no scarring.

The scrotum and vas deferens will be injected with local anaesthesia which makes the vasectomy procedure essentially painless. Patients feel at most a brief discomfort from the initial anaesthetic injections but no pain during the procedure.

The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and you will be able to drive home. You will need to avoid strenuous physical activity for 48 hours following your vasectomy but can then resume usual activities including sex after seven days.

Sperm can still be present in the vas deferens for up to four weeks following your vasectomy so you will need to use alternative contraceptive during this time.

Dr Ayo will arrange for you to come back to the clinic for a semen analysis to confirm successful infertility.
